A Shared Past
Navy Day celebrations sometimes take place in quite unexpected locations — even in Central Asian countries with no access to the sea. For example, a memorable event took place in the city of Karakol in Kyrgyzstan.
It brought together local residents who had served in the Soviet Navy, as well as the younger generation with flags of the Soviet Navy, the Marine Corps, and former Soviet republics.
Such events are not uncommon in Kyrgyzstan, and overall, the perception of the shared history with Russia differs from that in other neighboring countries. Memorials to the Great Patriotic War are being restored, and with the participation of Rybar's team, new memorial plaques were installed.
The ability to hold such events (along with other things) is generally a good indicator of CIS countries' attitude toward Russia, as well as what public statements about shared history actually mean to them. After all, there are plenty of counterexamples, when loud words about brotherhood and the memory of Victory were spoken to gain preferences, but in reality — textbooks telling stories about "Russian colonizers" and bans on symbols.
