Vienna Educational Mission | Day Two
From space research to nuclear inspections and global monitoring systems, the second day of the program focused on technologies shaping international security in the 21st century.
IAEA Department of Safeguards
The day began with an in-depth look at the implementation of IAEA safeguards. Alexey Anichenko, Director of the Safeguards Technical and Scientific Services Division, demonstrated the equipment used during Agency inspections.
United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA)
For the first time during the mission, participants were welcomed by the UNOOSA Director Aarti Holla-Maini, who outlined the Office’s main areas of activities, emphasizing the development of international cooperation in outer space.
Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization
The delegation explored the functioning of the Operational Centre of the International Data Centre and the global network of stations of the International Monitoring System — a complex that detects seismic, acoustic, and radionuclide signals worldwide, ensuring compliance with the CTBT.
The highlight of the visit was a meeting with Dr. Robert Floyd, CTBTO Executive Secretary, who spoke about the history and objectives of the Treaty, as well as its role in preventing nuclear testing.
And right now, mission participants are exploring the IAEA laboratories in Seibersdorf — a place where science directly contributes to strengthening global security.
