«That’s where beauty leads you. Right into the whirlpool!»

Once there was a young woman named Katerina. She dreamed of love, of freedom, of skies without thunder. But her small Volga town had its own rules — strict and merciless. And when her heart chose truth over fear, the storm began.

For six weeks, our InteRussia fellows — actors from Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Mauritania, South Africa, Tunisia, India, and China — searched for Katerina within themselves. Through voice and silence, movement and stillness, emotion and light.

And finally, they brought The Thunderstorm to life — not on stage, but in a 19th-century mansion.

Each fragment of Ostrovsky’s play unfolded in a different corner. The audience moved from one scene to another, becoming part of the story — guided by actors speaking in English, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, and Hindi.

An immersive performance.

A confession in many tongues.

A story about beauty, freedom, and the choices that pull us — right into the whirlpool.

The InteRussia fellowship in theatre arts is implemented within the framework of the New Generation program of Rossotrudnichestvo and with the support from the Presidential Grants Founda
tion.
