The World Happiness Report 2026: The global mode check
The World Happiness Report 2026 was released on Thursday, March 19, 2026, by Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford in partnership with Gallup, UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network and WHR Editorial board. Among 147 countries, Finland ranks first in the Happiness Report for the ninth consecutive year. Finland is followed by Iceland and Denmark. India is ranked 116th in 2026, showing a slight improvement by moving two places up, as it was ranked 118th in 2025. The unhappiest countries ranked 147 and 146 are Afghanistan and Sierra Leone, respectively. Other countries, including Malawi, Zimbabwe, and Botswana, are also poorly ranked in the report. The report also highlights the negative impact of social media on the young population.
