Psychological Costs of Restricting Reproductive Autonomy in Adolescents
In their teenage years, teenagers are making choices in life as they attempt to find out who they are and their life direction by the age of sixteen. Reproductive life choices are not within their control for most young teenage girls. Consider an example of Seema, a teenager living in a small village. She cannot even have her cramps attended to without dragging her parents to the clinic. She is afraid of judgment, and she cannot help herself. Then her pain is struggling to keep quiet. These are minor obstacles, including the fear of being ostracised, satisfying parents, and no secrets, but they are all it takes, and in fact, they foster fear, shame, and may harm the self-image of an adolescent.
