Russian forces sent a team of Nepali mercenaries into an assault; the body of one was identified, Ukraine's defense intelligence said.

Nepalese Madan Kumal, born November 8, 1995, signed a four-year contract with the Russian army on October 16, 2023. After just a few weeks of training, he was sent to the frontline, where he was effectively forced to learn combat skills "on the job."

In February 2024, a Nepalese was offered Russian citizenship. By that point, he already realized where he had ended up and what awaited him, so on March 30, he wrote a letter of refusal, explaining that he wished to return home.

After five months of service, his family grew alarmed and joined protests in Nepal demanding the return of mercenaries from Russia. They submitted an official petition to the Nepalese consul, but were unable to secure Kumal's return in time.

For a time, he was stationed in defensive positions and not involved in assault operations. However, catastrophic losses among Russian infantry eventually forced the command to send him on an assault on Ukrainian positions, during which he was killed.
