I'm a soldier, though I don't want to be one,
Who asked me? I swear there were none.
To the barracks I was dragged away,
And haunted like an animal every day.

Yes, away from my friends and home.
I had to leave all those whom I love.
When I think of this, it hurts 'cause I'm alone,
I feel nostalgia and anger with those above.

I'm a soldier, but I have no want to be him,
I don't love the soldiers' uniforms so rough.
I don't belong to the bloody gunfire team.
To defend myself, a stick would be enough.

O tell me, why should the soldiers exist?
All people only love stillness and peace,
Only the rulers want to spread this hateful mist,
They trade over, ah, the golden fields!

I am a soldier, I must march all the time,
Instead of working, I have to stand guard.
Instead of being free, I have to commit the crime,
And must see the young boys being so proud.

And when I go to fight, I have to kill my brothers,
None of them hurt me though.
I'll wear a sparkling medal to show it to others.
Starving, I'll shout "I was a soldier, you know!"

All you brothers, whether German, whether French,
whether Hungarian, Danish or from the Netherlands,
whether green, or red, or blue, or white you wear in the trench,
instead of greeting with bullets, let's greet with our hands!

Come on, let's march back to our homes
Liberate our people from the chains;
Only tyrants must pay for the wars,
We're soldiers of freedom, it's time to change!
