Some people believe that planting trees should be the main priority in urban areas rather than building new housing.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Opinions differ on what measures should be prioritized to improve the living conditions in urban areas. While some argue that planting trees is essential for cleaner air and residents’ well-being, I strongly believe it should not be the main priority, as housing shortages are equally urgent. A balanced strategy supported by government regulation would yield far better results.

In major cities, planting trees alone cannot address urban challenges, as the lack of affordable housing remains a pressing issue. Rapid urbanization has led to soaring property prices, leaving millions struggling to find adequate homes. For instance, in cities such as London and New York, high demand for accommodation has caused rent prices to skyrocket, forcing many people to live far from their workplaces. Therefore, prioritizing green spaces over housing would only deepen social inequality and reduce overall quality of life.

A more practical approach is to introduce urban planning regulations that balance environmental protection with construction needs. Japan, for example, enforces strict laws that require a certain proportion of green space in every new development. This policy has enabled the country to expand its cities without sacrificing environmental quality, demonstrating that clear regulations can ensure harmony between ecological and residential demands.

Therefore, the most effective and sustainable solution is to encourage construction companies to incorporate greenery into their projects. Governments can offer tax reductions or subsidies for eco-friendly buildings—those featuring rooftop gardens, vertical greenery, and tree-lined streets—which would motivate developers to include natural elements voluntarily. This approach tackles both environmental and housing challenges simultaneously, making it a far more practical and forward-thinking strategy than prioritizing tree planting alone.

In conclusion, although planting trees plays a vital role in creating sustainable cities, focusing exclusively on it is impractical. The most effective solution is to integrate greenery within housing projects through clear regulations and governmental incentives, ensuring both adequate housing and environmental protection.
