The term of punishment of certain convicts who read books may be reduced

Changes and additions were introduced to certain legislative acts by the Law (No. LRU–1114, dated January 15, 2026).

⏳ According to the introduced additions, the term of serving the punishment assigned to a person specified in Part 4 of Article 73 of the Code (except for those sentenced to life imprisonment) during the period of serving the punishment in the form of deprivation of liberty may be reduced.

✅ In this case, the fact of reading books from the list of literature aimed at forming correct spiritual and moral values in convicts, approved in a legitimate manner, must be confirmed.

📝 The term may be reduced by 3 days for each book read, but by no more than 30 days in 1 year.

🏛 The determination of the fact of reading books is carried out by a commission consisting of employees of the penal institution and representatives of the public, based on the application of the convict submitted to the administration of the penal institution.

✔️ Commission meetings are held at least 2 times a year.

📜 Based on the results of the examination, the commission adopts a conclusion on confirming the fact that the convict has read the books.

⏭️ An extract of the conclusion is sent to the prosecutor, handed to the convict against signature, and provided to the defense counsel of the convict upon their request.

🗒 When a conclusion on confirming the fact that the convict has read the books is adopted, the administration of the institution sends a submission to the court on reducing the term of serving the punishment due to the convict having embarked on the path of correction.

☑️ The reduction of the term of serving the punishment due to the convict having embarked on the path of correction is carried out by the court.
