Several citizens of Afghanistan say that to resolve their problems, especially to treat their illnesses, they turn to prayer writers before consulting a doctor. They claim that after visiting prayer writers, they have observed relative improvement in their condition. In their view, this method is less costly compared to consulting doctors and has at least caused them no harm. At the same time, others consider the increase in such visits concerning and say that following the Taliban’s takeover and the closure of universities to women, recourse to prayer writers has intensified. They add that people seek out these individuals for the treatment of various illnesses, particularly cancer and psychological disorders. According to these residents, turning to prayer writers is a form of superstition, and the practice is mostly used as a means of earning income and deceiving people. They warn that if this trend continues, superstitious beliefs will spread in society and lead to further negative consequences.

Those who visit prayer writers say that at present, most key and specialized positions are managed by mullahs, while the cost of medicine and treatment is high. According to them, this situation has led many people to lose trust in the healthcare system and turn to belief-based methods.

Some individuals who have visited prayer writers claim that after several rounds of recitations, they have regained their health or achieved their wishes.
