Reported Speech & Tense Shift ??????
When reporting what someone said, we usually shift the tense back.

? CORRECT EXAMPLES:
1?? Pronouns change:

Direct: "I am tired." ??

Reported: He said (that) he was tired. ?
(Not: ? He said that I was tired.)

Direct: "I am very happy." ??

Reported: Mary said (that) she was very happy. ?
(Not: ? Mary said that I was very happy.)

2?? Tense shifts back:

Direct: "I will come back next week." ??

Reported: She said (that) she would come back the following week. ?
(Not: ? She said that she will come back...)

Direct: "I will start jogging again next month." ??

Reported: Tom said (that) he would start jogging again the next month. ?
(Not: ? Tom said that he will start...)

?? Key Rule: In reported speech:
?? Pronouns change (I ? he/she, etc.).
?? Tense shifts back (is ? was, will ? would).
?? Time/Place words may also change (here ? there, next week ? the following week).

Using "If Only" for Wishes ??

To express a wish for the future, always use:
If only + Subject + WOULD + Verb ? NOT "will"

? Correct Examples:

"If only Mehdi would save some money! ??"
"If only she would sell me her car, I would pay more." ??
"If only they would listen! ??"

? Common Mistakes to Avoid:

"If only Mehdi will save..." ??
"If only Mehdi will sell..." ??

?? Remember: Use "would" to wish for a change in someone's behavior. It often shows a bit of impatience or complaint! ??
