Reported Speech & Tense Shift 🗣➡️📖
When reporting what someone said, we usually shift the tense back.
✅ CORRECT EXAMPLES:
1️⃣ Pronouns change:
Direct: "I am tired." 😴
Reported: He said (that) he was tired. ✅
(Not: ❌ He said that I was tired.)
Direct: "I am very happy." 😊
Reported: Mary said (that) she was very happy. ✅
(Not: ❌ Mary said that I was very happy.)
2️⃣ Tense shifts back:
Direct: "I will come back next week." 📅
Reported: She said (that) she would come back the following week. ✅
(Not: ❌ She said that she will come back...)
Direct: "I will start jogging again next month." 🏃
Reported: Tom said (that) he would start jogging again the next month. ✅
(Not: ❌ Tom said that he will start...)
💡 Key Rule: In reported speech:
🔸 Pronouns change (I → he/she, etc.).
🔸 Tense shifts back (is → was, will → would).
🔸 Time/Place words may also change (here → there, next week → the following week).
