On November 28, the World Telecommunication Development Conference (#WTDC) of the International Telecommunication Union (#ITU) concluded its work
in Baku.
The event brought together delegations from
more than 160 states at ministerial level, regional telecommunications organizations, as well as specialized academic and commercial bodies.
One of the key issues of the Conference was
the appointment of Russian experts to leading positions within the working bodies of the ITU Telecommunication Development Sector.
A number of EU delegations and Ukraine, in violation of the ITU’s constituent documents and in line with the Western Russophobic course, attempted to block the approval of Russian specialists for leadership roles in the Union’s working bodies. They sought to force a vote
exclusively on Russian candidates.
However, their efforts failed thanks to the resolute stance of the Russian delegation. In response to the West’s unconstructive stance, the Russian delegation put European candidates to a vote for corresponding positions.
With the support of the Regional Commonwealth in the Field of Communications (which includes the #CIS states and Mongolia) and its leadership, #BRICS partners, as well as countries of Africa and the Middle East,
Russian experts were ultimately elected, while European and Ukrainian delegates received deserved criticism from WTDC participants for attempting to politicize the work of what is, by its very nature, a technical ITU body.
