Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe died after being fatally shot on Friday while giving a campaign speech outside a train station in Nara.
🇯🇵Abe, 67, was Japan's longest-serving prime minister and was in office from 2006 to 2007, and again from 2012 to 2020.
Japanese police said they arrested a 41-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder.
The suspect used to work for Japan's navy and has told
police was "dissatisfied" with Abe, NHK reported.
Images of the gun purportedly used in the attack show a rudimentary,
seemingly homemade device that nonetheless was able to kill.
Abe's campaign visit
on Friday morning was only confirmed late the night before, the BBC reported. That detail raises questions about how his killer was able to act so quickly.
Japan is known to have almost completely eliminated gun deaths. It has a population of 127 million people and annual gun deaths rarely total more than 10.
