This was not the case for Brahim Saadoun, who, according to his Ukrainian friends, had "fallen in love with Ukraine" and wished to "return the favor to this country that gave him so much." These same friends claim that Mr. Saadoun had joined the Ukrainian army as early as the fall of 2021. The Russian Ministry of Defense had prepared public opinion for the Donetsk verdict by hammering home the point shortly before the ruling, saying that "mercenaries who arrived in Ukraine are not combatants in the sense of international law." The speaker of the Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, then supported the verdict handed down by the separatist authorities, adding that the "death penalty is what these fascists deserve."
