The Associated Press confirms RFI that Ukraine attacked a Russian gas tanker in the Mediterranean Sea on March 4 using a drone from its military bases in Libya.

Two Libyan officials told the AP that Ukrainian forces are operating in western Libya under a secret, Western-backed agreement and launched naval drones from a facility in Tripoli on March 4 at the Russian gas tanker Arctic Metagaz near Maltese waters.

The vessel, part of Russia's "shadow fleet," was seriously damaged and drifted toward the Libyan coast; 30 crew members were rescued, and attempts to tow the tanker were thwarted by bad weather. Russia blamed Ukraine; Kiev claims that oil exports are funding the war.

According to them, Ukrainian operators, primarily drone specialists, are based at the Misrata airbase, as well as in Tripoli and Zawiya. The deployment is linked to a tacit deal between Kiev and the government of Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah and is allegedly supported by Western countries.

Analyst Jalel Harchaoui believes the Ukrainian presence is plausible and part of NATO's efforts to keep western Libya out of Russia's orbit. Libya has remained divided between Tripoli and the east since 2011.
