The experimenters created 11 sexual harassment scenarios that described a workplace incident where a supervisor sexually harassed an employee.

Hypothesis 1a: at least 50% of the participants would conform at least once to the punishment selections offered by the confederates on the misinformation trials (example too hard)

Hypothesis 1b: participants would be more likely to conform to punishment selections that were harsh compared to lenient.

Hypothesis 2: The social influence of the confederates’ selections would significantly impact the responses of the participants, driving the average severity up (compared to the control participants) in the conditions where the confederates selected harsh punishments and driving the average severity down in the conditions where the confederates selected lenient punishments

Hypothesis 4: Participants who conformed to misinformation were predicted to experience a mismatch between their behavior and attitudes.

We found an overall conformity rate of 46%, as 82.67% conformed at least once to harsh or lenient punishment selections. Participants who conformed to incorrect punishment selections exhibited lower levels of decision confidence, indicating that conformity may have been due more to social normative influence.
